Loralee is a Southern woman and mother of ten-year-old Owen. Merritt is five years Loralee’s junior and Owen’s half-sister. They are strangers thrown together by circumstance.
Loralee introduces Merritt to the perfect afternoon snack which Owen loves. Coke with peanuts in it!
Quote:
“Wow!” he shouted. “It’s like it just popped in my head. Are there bubbles coming out of my ears?”
Preparation:
So this is a simple one to prepare. Start off easy, as they say! I bought a bottle of “real” Coke. Hecho en México Coke. Comes in a glass bottle Coke. Sugar not corn syrup Coke. Now, there’s a problem with this. I have a minor addiction to crappy comes from a gun in Mc Donald’s Coke. The two Cokes are very, very different. Back in the day, before America destroyed my taste buds that detect sweetness, I would have most definitely preferred the less-sweet Mexican bottled variety. Alas, those days are gone. I digress.
I bought some handy dandy store-brand dry-roasted, lightly salted peanuts. I believe the book specifies salty, but I couldn’t find them on the shelf. I looked for 6.38 seconds and gave it up as a bad job. Time is money, people!
I love peanuts. I love Coke. Fingers crossed.
- Pop that cap off… oh, the satisfying hiss and puff of air.
- Put a few nuts in… watch the beautiful dark liquid fizz.
- Put more in until the Coke overflows (oops)
So here I was. Coke with peanuts, in a bottle, in hand. So excited…
My take:
Not bad. Better than neutral. Yet underwhelming. A case in which the result is not better than the sum of its parts. So, I ate and choked on the remaining peanuts still in the drink because that’s what happens when you try to drink peanuts. Then I finished my Coke with more non-soggy peanuts on the side with less choking and more enjoyment. So much better.
Lesson of the day:
I prefer peanuts outside of my Coke!
